It's Monday! What are you reading? 6-25-18

It's Monday! What are you reading? Is a wonderful community of readers, teachers, and librarians. Hosted by Jen over at Teach Mentor Texts along with Kellee and Ricki at Unleashing Readers, participants share their reading adventures from the past week along with their reading plans for the week ahead.

My Monday posts are generally just a highlight of what I've been reading during the week so if you'd like to see all that I've been reading, follow my Goodreads page.

Last week I posted:

Two Truths and a Lie: Histories and Mysteries by Ammi-Joan Paquette and Laurie Ann Thompson

I finished reading:

We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
Incredibly sad story but very tender in its handling of grief

Picture books that stood out in the pile:

Crunch, the Shy Dinosaur by Cirocco Dunlap, illustrated by Greg Pizzoli
A fantastic interactive story that just begs to be read aloud.

A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo by Jill Twiss, illustrated by E.G. Keller
Any time you can troll Mike Pence with a story of love and acceptance I’m all for it.

Prince & Knight by Daniel Haack, illustrated by Stevie Lewis
A prince finds his knight in shining armor

Yaffa and Fatima: Shalom, Salaam by Fawzi Gilani0-Williams, illustrated by Chiara Fedele
Two young girls, one Jewish, the other Muslim, who are neighbors and friends and in spite of what history says about the animosity of these two religions, draw from their faith to look out for each other. A beautiful story that reminds us to be curious and kind in the face of differences.

Currently (still) reading:

Rebound by Kwame Alexander
Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics by Dan Harris

  1. Will look for Crunch for the youngest granddaughter who loves dinosaurs and I need to read We Are Okay, still on my list!

  2. Crunch was really fun to read aloud. I loved how the kids all got quite and laid down at the end.

  3. I had the same sentiments for We Are Okay -- beautifully written, but oh so sad. I am intrigued by Yaffa and Fatima. This is a new title for me so I'm going to see if I can hunt it down. Thanks for sharing!

  4. We Are Okay is one of my absolute favorite books, but it definitely broke my heart

  5. I adored We Are Okay. There is a reason a book wins the Michael Printz award.
I really wish Yaffa and Fatima was available in my library. It sounds like I should recommend its purchase.

  6. We Are Okay is on my syllabus for next semester! I am glad you feel that it handled grief well. My students are reading it alongside Goodbye Days and The Astonishing Color of After. I hope it goes well. I always get nervous when I introduce new books.

  7. Oooh. I am looking forward to finding Yaffa and Fatima: Shalom, Salaam - I do hope we can find it in our libraries soonest. I've been reading so many great things about We are Okay. :) - Myra (GatheringBooks)
