A special delivery

This past weekend some friends of ours were returning home from a trip to Chicago and since we live on their way home, they were nice enough to special deliver dinner for us (keep in mind that we live in Southeastern Michigan, about 4 hours from Chicago):

The sandwich drowning in a spicy tomato broth is called "Torta Ahogada" but I prefer to call it "Torta Oh-My-God-A." It has pork carnitas, pickled onions, and black beans, but the magic of the sandwich is dunking it that spicy tomato broth.

Now those are great friends -- not only ones who are willing to deliver you dinner and dessert from four hours away, but who understand the mantra "Will travel for food."They didn't think it was the least bit crazy to deliver us dinner from four hours away. In fact, they suggested it. I guess that's why we're going to San Francisco with them in June - so we can eat our way from one end of the city to the other!

    I'll bet foodie friends are fun. Dipping in tomato soup is a new one for me. Looks delicious. Have never eaten black beans. What do black beans taste like? I like Black Eyed peas, Great Northerns and Lima beans.

    What a fun idea! A great way to have a special visit without having anyone go to too much trouble.

    For Tea norman, black beans are more like the red beans that you normally have in chili or the pinto beans in Mexican refried beans. I'm not a big bean fan and black beans were the first that I taught myself to like. If you like Great Northerns, I don't think you'll have any trouble branching out to black beans. I make a three-bean vegetarian chili that has Great Northerns, black beans, and kidney beans.

    That sandwich sounds delicious and well deserving of the nickname you gave it! I am a fan of Sprinkles cupcakes…I assume it's the same Sprinkles that's in NYC?

    Ah, those are the best kinds of friends. I have carried potato chips and chocolates across the country (via 5 hour plan rides), so I understand completely!
