She always baked the most wonderful tasting cakes. Fortunate for her, she lives in a retirement home that has baking as part of their programs for the residents. For the first time that i know of, she made us butter tarts last year.Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04501259287565067209noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2202949130902554989.post-79254554136047125182013-04-07T15:37:40.118-04:002013-04-07T15:37:40.118-04:00I have to disagree with you on the amount of food ...I have to disagree with you on the amount of food language. I've read books before that were written for kids and were still dripping with food descriptions. Actually, the book Pie by Sarah Weeks comes to my mind immediately. You don't have to use "food language" per se to write about food and make people hungry. There's a line in "The All American Slurp" by Lensey Namioka that just describes the taste of celery that made me hungry for celery:

"I took a bite, and then my brother. Crunch, crunch. It was more than good; it was delicious. Raw celery has a slight sparkle, a zingy taste that you don’t get in cooked celery."

I guess that's the piece I was missing from this book: the feeling of being hungry for cake while I was reading. I loved the untangling of the mystery and the inclusion of the cake baking - I think there was just the right amount of food language for kids (if not for adults). The word "emporium", it's such an unusual word and immediately reminds me of one of my favorite movies, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium.

I wonder if this book has the same whimsical qualities.

Rie @ Mission to Read Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13127589885543938568noreply@blogger.com
